ADDON: Insert 500+ Smileys popup (.ASP)

The htmlArea 2 & 3 editors have been discontinued.

We've made these forums available as a read-only reference and knowledge-base for people using or developing editors based on htmlArea 2 or 3.

Anyone who is interested in taking over version 2 or 3 is free to do so. All we ask is that you choose a new name that doesn't have "htmlarea" in it to avoid confusion with this site. We'll even give you a link in the directory to make it easier for people to find you. If you are developing or hosting an htmlArea based-editor under a new name, please submit it to our directory.

ADDON: Insert 500+ Smileys popup (.ASP) Can't Post

Insert 500+ smileys Add-on V0.1 for htmlArea V2.03
These ASP-routines creates a popup with paging, from which you can choose to insert a smiley. This package includes more than 500 smileys (and a few other critters as well) and in most cases they are animated.

Download available here: http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-57488/htmlarea_smileys.zip
Its a 611kB file. Unfortunatly the forum does not allow >250kB, so I had to store it elsewhere Crazy.

Demo available here: http://www.engvall.nu/htmlarea_smileys/example.html

Installation;
This package includes V2.03 of htmlArea with all the changes needed to activate the Smiley popup-dialog, together with the ASP-files needed and a smileys_readme.txt (this text). Unpack the files on your IIS-server and open the example.html file.

If you want to make the changes yourself it is very easy. Open your editor.js file.

1/ Insert ['Smiley'], under "this.toolbar ="-array to add a new command/icon to the toolbar

2/ Under the block "// Add custom buttons here:" insert the following line;
"smiley": ['smiley', 'Insert smiley', 'editor_action(this.id)', 'ed_smiley.gif'],

3/ Under the block "// CUSTOM BUTTONS START HERE" insert the following code;

else if (cmdID == 'smiley') {
var myTitle = "Insert Smileys";
var myText = window.showModalDialog(_editor_url + "smiley_select.asp",
myTitle, "resizable: no; help: no; status: no; scroll: no; ");
if (myText) { editor_insertHTML(objname, myText); }
}

4/ Remember to copy the file ed_smiley.gif into your images folder

5/ The files smiley_insert.asp and smiley_select.asp must be located in the root of the htmlArea folder.

5/ Thats it. the smileys are btw located in the folder smileys....

Thatís it I guess. If you start htmlArea you should now have a new icon (with a smiley). Click on it and youíll get a popup-dialog with the possibility to select more than 500 smileys.

Bugs and other notes;
No known so far. In fact I canít really figure out why these routines works at all Angelic
Well, thereís a slight problem when you have many files in the smileys folder, because the dialog (the content) doesnít show up until the filesystem object have read all files (takes approx 6 sec on my localhost). It also takes a sec or two, to load each page of smileys. So the less images the faster the content of the popup appears. If anybody has any optimation suggestions please let me know.

You could also actually use this dialog to insert other graphics, e.g predefined symbols, logos etc. But then you have to change some of the table definition within the ASP-code, enabling you to have other sizes etc. And you might have to enlarge the popup size too.

You have also got two variables named intPicsPerRow = 5 and intPicsPerPage = 30. The first one states how many images/row and the other one images/page.

Have fun....

Best regards // Pat! (Now I put on my Cool and crash in the sofa for a while...)

Hi Benjamin and MrWante,
Thanks for perfect review Ben Blush.
MrWante, Nah! thats not sad just install IIS and your problem is solved Wink. Just kidding man. Unfortunatly my PHP-awareness is just about zero to none (or maybe it's null Pirate). But since the forummembers here are very active, I am sure that someone will take upon themselves to do the same with PHP in a near future.

Have a nice weekend (whats left of it)

Any idea why when I save a page with my editor the smileys don't always have the same URL.

On most computers (including mine), I get the following:

<IMG src="http://fslactivities.sd61.bc.ca/ezHTMLarea/smileys/0001.gif" align=absMiddle border=0>

But on some computers, I get something like this:

<IMG src="file:///C:/ezHTMLarea/smileys/0001.gif" align=absMiddle border=0>

Thanks for this great add-on,

Pierre

Hello Pierre,

Are you running IIS on all machines or do you use e.g Chilisoft ASP?
I have never managed to produce the error you describe. My best guess is that something is wrong with your path configuration (within the addon script).

Please let me know of you findings....

Best regards // Pat!

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your reply. If you have a look at my editor you'll see that I only use it as a web-based editor. In fact, I don't really know what I'm doing. So, I have no idea what you mean by "IIS on all machines or do you use e.g Chilisoft ASP". I modified a script that saves the content of the htmlArea on someone's computer. The problem is that not all computers handle the pictures the same way. What is sort of weird is that some computers will keep the actual URLs of the pictures copied from the internet but the smileys look like they come from the C drive.

Hi Pierre,

About IIS or ChiliSoft ASP... I was just curious if you where using Mictrosoft Internet Information Services (IIS) as server software or if you using other server software with e.g Chilisofts ASP (an ASP interpretor making it possiblwe to run ASP pages on other servers than IIS).

In any case I have no idea of how compatible Chilisoft are with the IIS today.

Your creation seems great. When I save a file using your tool I get the full path (not a c:\ path). I have no clue why it actually differs from machine to machine. REAL Strange!Shocked

Just for your information, I had a chance to double-check again on one of the computers that react differently when using my "Save this page on your computer" function.

The smileys appear in htmlArea with this path:

<IMG src="/ezHTMLarea/smileys/0013.gif">

They are then saved with the same path. What is weird is that pictures copied from the internet keep their path but not the smileys.

Nah, I dont believe it will work directly with V3 and I havent worked on a conversion to the V3 yet. There might be something similar (to my knowledge not with paging though). Search the V3 forum.
