htmlArea v2.0 (beta2) released

The htmlArea 2 & 3 editors have been discontinued.

We've made these forums available as a read-only reference and knowledge-base for people using or developing editors based on htmlArea 2 or 3.

Anyone who is interested in taking over version 2 or 3 is free to do so. All we ask is that you choose a new name that doesn't have "htmlarea" in it to avoid confusion with this site. We'll even give you a link in the directory to make it easier for people to find you. If you are developing or hosting an htmlArea based-editor under a new name, please submit it to our directory.

htmlArea v2.0 (beta2) released Can't Post

Here's what's new:

New Docs
  • created new readme.html with install instructions, faq, and lots of information

  • New Features
  • added support for external stylesheets
  • get enlarge/shrink window working
  • added insert table button
  • get context menu working (still disabled by default, needs more code for functionality)
  • allow user to change ANY option in internal config from calling page
  • added _editor_filterOutput function that's called on form submit

    Bug Fixes / Optimizations
  • organized associated files into directories
  • fixed bug that caused htmlarea to sometimes not display last entered content when user pressed back in their browser.
  • moved about window into a seperate file to reduce size of editor

    ---

    You can try it out here: http://www.interactivetools.com/staff/dave/htmlarea/

    The readme is here: http://www.interactivetools.com/staff/dave/htmlarea/readme.html

    And the download zip: http://www.interactivetools.com/staff/dave/htmlarea/htmlarea_v2.00_beta2.zip

    ---

    The good news is the filterOutput function will let us do all sorts of useful things, including producing xhtml output.

    Let me know if you find any bugs, issues, etc. Otherwise I'll make this 2.0 and we'll start counting up from there. : )

    My favorite new feature is the "maximize" editor button. On some forms the edit field isn't really big enough to see what things look like, so with that you can pop open a resizable editor that let's your make that field as big as you need.

    I agree....It is certainly a nice feature.

    I don't at all want to sound pushy or like I'm taking the work you guys are doing for granted, but is there any idea when it might be possible to "modify" a table once it's already been created?

    For example, I want to append a column or delete some rows. Perhaps I want to change the alignment or cell spacing.

    Can you tell us anything about this?

    As always, I definitely appreciate your work and help here in the forums.

    I know how you feel, I'd love to have table modification right now as well. In fact, we're holding off on adding htmlArea to some of our own products until we can get that very important feature added.

    I was originally going to hold off a new release until we could get that feature, but time was passing so I thought it would be better to release some new features now and the others when they were ready than waiting for everything to be done.

    Table modification is a little tricky, so it's taking a little longer, but it's next on the list. I'm still trying to figure out the best way for it to work, how the user interface will be, etc.

    What version of vB are you using? Don't they have their own editor? I actually emailed them a while back and they said they were releasing their own editor?

    It probably is, I'm not really sure how to do it though. It depends on whether their editor outputs regular tags or "forum HTML" like this for bold for images, etc. The easiest way to experiment would be to turn off their html editor so you just have a plain textarea again, and then try and add some code to the page to replace that textarea with htmlArea.

    If you discover anything useful be sure to let us know! : )

    Ok! I try to give you some explanations...

    In htmlArea all tegs after clicks changes to html tags.

    Ex:

    B=<b.>test</b.> |w/o dots|

    In vBulletin its a [b.]test[/b.] |w/o dots|... Understand?

    I cane give you all vBulletin tegs, if you can change for me this script... And after you can release it in vbulletin.org. Many pplz say thanks you for that job.. :)

    Sorry for my english - it`s too bad :(

    In WYSIWYG mode (as opposed to HTML mode where you can see all the tags) htmlArea displays things just as the browser would. So if in your source you have <Hello> htmlArea will display it as <Hello> in WYSIWYG mode. And if you enter <Hello> in WYSIWYG mode it would have <Hello> in HTML mode. Basically, if you can SEE the < and > tags, it means they'll be submitted as < and >.

    Hi Dave,

    When in full screen mode the 'view HTML source' button does not work and returns an error. Happens in both your example and my test installation. Thanks for a great tool.

    Ahh, I see what's happening. If you're redisplaying HTML content in a textarea you need to html encode it again, even if the output is already html encoded. For example, If you do this:

    <hr>

    The textarea will display "
" because when the browser reads < it interprets it as "<". You might try html encoding your content before you print it out to your textarea. At the minimum, replacing & with & should make the browser display html entities AS html entities. For example:

    &lt;hr&gt;

    displays as "<hr>" in the browser.

    Does that make any sense? Hope that helps! : )

    Dave...
    There's something that is not working as it should.
    If write somthing and click enter, the script insert's "

". Now if you hit the backspace and go check the code the "

" it's still there.

    One other thing. How can I custumize my html area to insert
when you click enter?

    See you around

    PS - I'm getting an error message after clicking full editor (in html area 2.0)

    Hmm, that's seems to be something IE is doing. It looks like it adds a space and if you hit backspace AND delete it will get rid of it. We're likely going to add some code at some point so it won't submit emtpy form fields as "

".

    As far as insert
tags. The easy way is shift-enter, other than that, if the content is inside a

it will create new div tags when you press enter instead of new
tags. The final way is to jump into code and try and catch the "enter" keypress event, cancel it, and insert
instead. I'm not sure how tricky that would be.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi, great editor, but if I insert a picture and then try to resize it or something like that I will get a runtime error. The error says that it is on the 520íth row and the error is: object doesnít support this property or method.

    I donít know if itís my computerís mistake or there really is an error there.

    Hi everyone,
    in order to force the system not to add the

at the end of each paragraph, I developed the follow function:

    function CheckTheKey() {
    var range = document.selection.createRange();
    if (window.event.keyCode == "13") {
    range.pasteHTML("
");
    event.returnValue = false;
    }
    }

    This function is called with a onkeypress event.

    Forward to your following message, I've seen you have used the onkeypress event so perhaps you will know how to resolve the problem of the fullscreen editor. Cf.

    Hi Tonio:

    I repeat here a previous posting:

    Hi jbiswajit:

    I was experiencing the same problem. I never found where the error is and after a strong headache and some kind of frustration I gave up, and since it doesn't seem to make anything misbehave, I managed to kill the error message, putting the following code in the
section of the page where the textarea is:

    This will prevent the error message to show up; however, it will also prevent the detection of any other js error. So, if you use it, make sure to comment it out every time you add new functionality, until you successfully test the new functions.

    Don't give up!!
