Show 'loading' until ready to edit

The htmlArea 2 & 3 editors have been discontinued.

We've made these forums available as a read-only reference and knowledge-base for people using or developing editors based on htmlArea 2 or 3.

Anyone who is interested in taking over version 2 or 3 is free to do so. All we ask is that you choose a new name that doesn't have "htmlarea" in it to avoid confusion with this site. We'll even give you a link in the directory to make it easier for people to find you. If you are developing or hosting an htmlArea based-editor under a new name, please submit it to our directory.

Show 'loading' until ready to edit Can't Post

Hi

Does anyone have code to show a 'loading' message while the htmlArea loads and initialises?

At the moment, the TextArea displays raw HTML until it is converted to an htmlarea. For people on dial-ups this can be quite a while. New users are confused by seeing raw HTML. So it would be nice to display a 'loading' message until it is ready to type - with a progress bar or just a flashing message.

Cheers, julian

In our implementation, we hide the editor while the Javascript is being loaded and display a "Please Wait" message. Here's what we did...

Right after the body tag we added:

Code
   <div id="pleasewait">Loading editor...<br>please wait</div>

Around the textarea and save/cancel buttons we added:

Code
   <div id="editor" style="visibility:hidden">
</div>

We added a style sheet entry to the page like this:

Code
   #pleasewait {
text-align: center;
font-size: 30pt;
position: relative;
top: 80;
background-color: #aaa;
font-weight: bolder;
border: 5px solid black;
}

Finally, at the end of the initEditor() function (right after "editor.generate()", we added:

Code
   document.getElementById('pleasewait').style.display='none'
document.getElementById('editor').style.visibility='visible'

There is still a little delay after the Javascript has loaded and before the editor button images have loaded, but it's a lot better.

That'll do nicely.

Flashing messages & progress bars will have to wait.
